Sri Vinayaka Natya Mandali was earlier Kamalananda Natya Mandali. It was established in the year 1925 by Sri R. Koteswar Rao, in the Village “Undi”, West Godavari District. First it was founded as “Kamalananda Natya Mandali”, on this banner. “Sondamini” drama, written by Pattipati Nagabhushana Sharma, was exhibited. Particularly this drama theatre was staged in Andhra and Rayalaseema Areas in many times. R. Koteswar Rao was not only actor, but also writer. He wrote Mugguru Marateelu, Chenchulaxmi, Gunasundari Katha, were very popular. Whenever they stage these drama and were fully enjoyed and appreciated by the audience.
They used to travel their drama materials through Railway Wagons, wherever they go to play their drams. Koteshwar Rao has two wives, one Laxmi Kanthamma another wife was Vinajakshamma. He has seven boys two girls. After death of Koteswar Rao, the entire responsibilities were on should of R.Narasimha Rao son of Koteswar Rao. In 1970, Mr. R. Narasimha Rao, changed the name as “Vinayaka Natya Mandali” from “Kamalananda Natya Mandali”.
Starwats, Rama Rao and Koteswar Rao were Pandits also, they know “Amaram” and Sanskrit Language. They changed their language Marati, to Telugu and learned accordingly – First they used to exhibit their performances as “Bhagavathulu” before good audience of Zamindars and Land Lords. Under their, encouragements, slowly they tuned to Drama shows regularly. Specially the myth logical plays were very popular. In those days, the plays were attractive, and technically high valued.
Rekandar Family: Such a beautiful theatre has got a golden son, he was name of one Sri Rekandar Narasimha Rao, took a tremendous lead to enrich the theatre. He was a good actor, director and organizer. R. Narasimha Rao was the writer of “Pathala Bhairavi” play which is still running in the theatre. His father Koteswar Rao wrote very popular dramas, like Chenchulaxmi, Gunasundari Katha. Even today the old scripts are very standard and having dramatic values. After R. Narasimha Rao’s period, the entire theatre was on shoulder of his sons Sri R. Mohan Rao and R. Venu Gopal Rao taking full responsibility and management of Sri Vinayaka Narya Mandali.
R. Narasimha Rao, was not only actor and director and painter and writer. For his best appearance as “Harish Chandra”, he was awarded by Rs.5,000/- by the then Chief Minister Late B. Gopal Reddy and also felicitated as “Nata Simha”.
He has got ten children – two wives. Savithri Devi and Sarojini Devi. Sarojinamma was daughter-in-law of Rangoon-Parvathamma. She was good “Singer and Actor”. Her famous roles were Savithri, Sangu, Yashoda, Rukku, Anasuya etc., has five children – Three male and two were female. Now, the Manager of Sri Vinayaka Natya Mandali Sri Venu Gopal Rao, is son of Sarojinamma, Savrithri Devi has three males and three females. Mr.R. Mohan Rao also the Manager of Sri Vinayaka Natya Mandali is son of Savithri.
This touring talkies is mainly situated in the capital city Hyderabad since last three years. Mr. R. Venu Gopal Rao, now leader of the team Is exhibiting number of plays including, mythy-logical, historical and social. He introduced new dramas like “Pothuluri Veerabrahmendra Swamy, Sri Saibaba and “Srinivasa Kalyanam”, which was written by PSR Anjaneyulu. This Srinivasa Kalyanam was directed by Late Andra Sambamurthy, veteren director of plays. In this play “Dinakar” young and beautiful son of Sri R. Venu Gopal Rao, plays role of “Srinivas”. His role as Srinivas will be highly applauded by the audience, when he appears on stage. The Manger R. Venu Gopal Rao is known for his organizational skills. Right from constructing temporary tin sheet theatre to seating arrangement he is well versed in theatre knowledge. Also he is expert in arranging powerful mike system and light effects, wire work and other stage techniques. He has own auditorium with electric equipment, curtains according to story, chairs and auto for publicity with everything. All these items are dexteriously handled by the members of Sri Vinayaka Natya Mandali (SURABHI) irrespect of their age. All the family members (30) are in practice door rehearsals of their plays time to time apart from daily household duties.
Devotion: The team has sportive spirit in playing their roles, dedicating the art of drama. Never the low income, depression, dishearten them. They play their goal is utmost satisfaction of the viewer. Even for one viewer, unhesitant they stage full length play.
Income: The committed artists never hesitated to stage aplay even though they got a little amount. But it is a fact that, daily their expenses goes upto Rs.5,000/- for each play. It is piteous condition to exist their families within the least amount. It is the duty of every drama lover, should pay attention by helping purchasing tickets and encourage the Samajam i.e., Sri Vinayaka Natya Mandali.
Really this is a wonderful theatre leading with only family members in the world. Every play has its own credit. Each artist character with devoting to the drama is highly appreciable. Each drama is a remark to Telugu Theatre. Each item will be highly technical value with fantastic lighting and good sound system with powerful mikes which is audible.
This Vinayaka Natya Mandali (Surabhi) is at present situated at Hyderabad attracting good viewers.
Income: Highly entertainment is moto of this theatre is behind with low income. Nowadays only depended on viewers. Even ticker charge of 25 Rupees encouragement is not sufficient. It requires people support for its existence.
He has played in various roles as narrated earlier, performed approximately 30 plays and enacted all the major roles. He has played the roles like Sri Krishna, Manmadha and Lohithasa. He has enacted the role of Villain characters such as Viswamithra, Veera Bahu, Ravan Brahma, Kamsa, Mayala Marathi, Hiranya Kasyapa, Yama and Duryodhana. With a lot of artistic skills, He has played the roles of Sri Rama, Satya Harischandra, Narada, Balarama, Vikramarka, Veerabrahmam Garu. In these roles the divinity of the Gods merges with humanity with ease, ecstasy and excellence. The thin line of difference melts into air, into thin air.
It is not an exaggeration to say that he took the Srinivas Kalyanam Drama to the nook and corner of Andhra Pradesh with the assistance of Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam and the Government of Andhra Pradesh and also to the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu and Karnataka, received the applause from one and all.

• He has KALA RATNA (HAMSA) Award from Govt. of Andhra Pradesh on 24th March 2018.
• He has received the Rangasthala Kala Dhureena of Telugu Nataka Academy in 1996.
• Another important award called Burra Venkata Subba Rao Award instituted by telugu University also was received by me.
• The Governor of Andhra Pradesh also gave me commendation Certificate. Like a true devotee to art-form
• He has Received BIG Telugu Entertainment Award in the year 2013
• He has received many felicitations from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Governments, Sangeetha Nataka Academy - New Delhi and Karnataka Government.
• He is excellent with my harmonium, handed over to me three generations ago.
